I don’t know what to do in the long holidays? Winter evenings as if specially created in order to conduct their sitting in a comfortable chair with a good book (and don’t forget the plaid!). We have written five books about doctors and patients who would sweep you.

Oliver Sacks. The man who mistook his wife for a hat (and other stories from medical practice)

A book with the intriguing title about the amazing patients of Dr. Sachs has gone through one reprint and has been translated into many languages. Each case is interesting and unusual. Simple and understandable language the author explains why there are abnormalities in the brain. How to take wife for a hat? Is it possible to “see” numbers? What is phantom pain?

The book is about the difficult things written in simple and clear language, and the abundance of medical terms does not make it similar to the special literature.

Quote: Lost a leg or eye, the man knows about it; losing identity, know this is impossible, because there is no one to realize the loss.

Neurosurgeon Henry Marsh simply and sincerely tells about his daily routine. Every day he has to inform patients terrible diagnoses, conduct complex operations, to communicate with the relatives of those who have discovered a terrible disease. He describes in detail the course of operations. It really is so realistic, that in those moments when something goes wrong, for a moment, it becomes very scary. The book reads in one breath, but those who are afraid of the medical details, the reader may not come to taste.

Quote: there is No evidence that a complete shaving of the head, which in the past was mandatory, and because of which the patient becomes like a prisoner, somehow lowers the likelihood of post-operative infection, and in fact this is the main official reason for this manipulation. I suspect that the real reason – though this, of course, no one said, lay in the fact that the lack of hair depersonalizing the patient and, thus, the surgeon is much easier to perform the operation on the brain.

Arthur Haley. Strong medicine

The reader will learn about everything that’s going on in the pharmaceutical company “Felding-Mouth”: research, discoveries, intrigue, blackmail. It turns out that the lives of many patients depend on the decisions of one individual, the decision is not always the case. The book was written several decades ago, but not lost relevance – as most other industrial novels Hailey.

Quote: every drug should be your first patient.

Daniel Keyes. Multiple minds of Billy Milligan

The plot of the book is based on real events – the tragic and strange story of Billy Milligan. He is one of the most famous patients with a diagnosis of “multiple personality disorder”. His body had coexisted 24 full of personality, among whom were men and women of different ages and of different nationalities and even children.

In the late 1970-ies famous was the trial of Milligan was accused of robbery and rape. Whether he is guilty or is it multiple faceted personalities? How to live when one person is constantly after another: instead of the aggressive drug dealer occurs active lesbian and she was replaced by a three year old?

Quote: — You want to say the person is mentally ill when he is angry or depressed?

— So.

Do all of us, there are no periods of anger or depression?

In fact, we are all mentally ill.

Fedor Corners. Heart surgeon

An autobiographical novel, written by an outstanding surgeon. The doctor talks about his childhood, choice of profession, studies, work, successes, and failures with which he had to face during the years of medical practice. Experience Feodor Uglova is huge because he used to a hundred years and was the first in the country, who could be given a chance for salvation for those patients previously considered inoperable.

Each patient for Uglova unique and unusual. And it’s not just that each of them has their diagnosis. The doctor paid special attention to the careful and attentive treatment of patients is that, perhaps, so often lacking in many professionals.

Quote: the doctor Himself in his behavior should be on top. He even at the most extenuating circumstances is not entitled to a lack of attention or harshness in relation to the patient or his family. After all, how would relatives or tired of the questions and “advice”, no matter how disturbed they are at the crucial hour, we must remember that they are worried about their own person. Remember their pain, put yourself in their place!
